Question
Hey,
I am interested in a chow puppy that is a mut but I don't know what breed because the puppy hasn't been born yet. I have read that Chow Chow's can be vicious and I don't want a dog that can attack me or a neighbor if I am sitting outside. Please help so I don't miss out on adopting agreat dog.

Answer
Hi Angie;
Just like children, your dog will behave the way it is trained to behave.
There is no such thing as a "vicious" breed.
There are only dogs that are raised by idiots.
If you don't teach a child properly, it will become a shin-kicking little brat, and the same goes for dogs.
Take it around people so it gets used to people, and other animals.
If it doesn't play nicely with other dogs, scold it just like you would scold a child if it tried to bully other children.
Right now, go watch a training class on the weekend at Pesmart or Petco.
You can watch what the trainer shows peole how to handle their dogs.
You can take the puppy with you, that way it will get used to being around other dogs.
As soon as your puppy is old enough to go to class, ( age differs with different reiners) ?Some of them teach "puppy" clases for little ones and they need their first training. Ask about those classes.
YOU have to be the alpha. NEVER let the dog become the boss, or you will raise a nightmare.
I don't spank or hit at all. I use time out. #0 minutes alone in the small bathroom in the hall, after I have chewed them out royally and told them that is not TOLERATED.
Be a sweet mommy, but a firm one, and you will raise a little sweetheart.
But,,,, YES, if you are threatened, a chow can be a booger to the one who threatens you. they do make great family companions and protectors, if they are trained right.
