My husband brought home a dog that he found standed by the highway. It was alive but her mother had been hit and died. She, Rowan, has grown into a beautiful dog and I have been trying to figure out what breed she is. The closest I have seen is an Anatolian shepard. Is there any way I could get a picture to you to see so I could get your opinion?

Hi Michelle,

I'm sure you can understand why I do not give out my personal email address, but there are ways for me to view a photo of your dog.

Answer
Hi Michelle,

It's certainly possible that Rowan can be part Anatolian shepherd. She doesn't seem to be as large as a pure bred and Rowan's neck isn't as long, but it doesn't rule out having some Anatolian blood.

There's also the possibility that Rowan is just a "non-standard breed specimen". It could well be that Rowan just isn't a show quality Anatolian.

Other breeds, that I feel could combine and create a dog with Rowan's features could be any combination of:
Chinook, Labrador Retriever, Mountain Cur, and depending on where the dog was found; Yellow Blackmouthed Cur and other Cur breeds: these were all-purpose farm dogs used for herding and hunting by settlers in what used to be remote regions of the United States -- "Old Yeller" was a dog of this type. If Rowan was yellow, I think she'd look quite a bit like the dog from that famous movie.

Whatever her lineage, Rowan certainly is a lucky dog to have been found by such a loving family, where she's treated like a princess!

Regards,

Patti
