Question
I took my dog to the vet today 2 days after having puppies, she was breathing heavy and drinking alot( very sick) the vet did c-section and removed 2 puppies that had not been expelled(dead of course). She sent her home 2 hours later and she to call her if she didnt act right well 2 hours later back at the vet she looked at her (quick once over) and sent us home said she was fine, 4 hours later my dog is dead, totally dehydrated after we called to get her to come back to the office she put us off for an hour and a half, i called and told her not to come, shes dead. Did she hurry us off because of the holiday weekend or are these time frames normal for a c- section? Now we have 10 orphan puppies! and looking for a new vet (maybe) can you give me any info? im very frustrated right now as i have lost one dog to old age 3 weeks ago and 1 got hit on the road last week now this please help

Answer
Jessie-

I am so sorry for your loss.

Yes, I would certainly look for a new vet. I can not believe she sent your bitch home immediatly after a c-section. She should have been hospitalized for 24-48 hours to monitor her blood count and to ensure she was hydrated. Retaining puppies for two days is EXTREMLY dangerous and she was probably in really bad shape when they did the emergancy C-section. She should have been on oxygen and IV fluids for at least 24 hours, and may have needed a blood transfusion directly after the c-section.

I can't help you find a new vet since I don't know where you are, but I suggest posting adds on your local craigslist looking for good reviews.

Good luck, and again, I am SO sorry to hear of your loss.
