scrotal ablation with neutering

Question
My golden retriever is 20 mos. old and about to be neutered. The vet called and asked if we wanted them to also perform scrotal ablation.  At his age is there any problem(s) we should be aware of if a scrotal ablation is NOT performed

Answer
Hi Alison,

The scrotum (sack that houses the testes) is normally left behind and this gradually shrinks away after the neutering operation. In some large breeds with particularly pendulous scrotum's, it's best to remove the scrotum together with the testes (a "scrotal ablation").

Because your dog is not a puppy, and is "mature" in that area, a scrotal ablation can be done so the dog won't be left with a big floppy sack hanging behind him.

It's a cosmetic procedure, and purely optional on your part.

Best of luck,

Patti
