Food and Tear Stains

Question
QUESTION: Hi.
I have an english bulldog who is now 7+ months old. When I got him from the breeder he was 4 months old and eating Eukanuba Puppy Growth. I swtiched him to EVO's Turkey, Chicken & Rice Formula and did so over a period of over 10 days since I had a ton of Eukanuba left. He seemed to be doing fine although his stool has always soft once I switched. Lately he's been getting diarrhea. It happened first on Friday the 9th and then again yesterday.. so 10 days in between.. Poop was all watery. After he got sick the first time I fed him rice and broth for a while and then slowly started introducing the food in the chicken. I would say he was back on eating just his kibble for 4-5 days when he got water poop again. I've gotten him checked for parasites and he doesnt have any. Could it be the food? Maybe its too rich for him? Any suggestions? He is otherwise great. Really smart, playful and very sweet.
One thing I should mention is that this started after weather got nice and I started taking him to the dog park near me more often. Could it be something he is eating there? I've seen him lick rocks a few times. He is on heartworm pills once a month.
My other question is about tear stains... they've started to get bad recently so I went from once a day cleaning to twice a day. Ive read some people recommend putting a bit of white vinegar in his water which I started doing (but stopped yesterday when he got sick). Any suggestions on what else to do to prevent them? I am cleaning him twice a day with a wet cotton ball (warm water) and then drying it with a dry cotton ball....
Thanks so much for your help.
Andrea

ANSWER: Hello Andrea,

It most likely is the food switch.  There are many factors that can play a part in dogs having diarrhea, eating something is most always the problem.  Your vet checked for parasites and that has been cleared. The EVO is good food, the turkey can causes loose stools in some cases.

My brother has an English Bulldogs that had the same problem as a young dog until he switched to Life's Abundance that I also feed and recommend.  The tear stained marks on his dog starting disappearing as well, (not all gone but better).

I don't really like dog parks for the reason you just don't know if a dog that is carrying some disease has been there leaving it's mark.  Same thing at your vet office grounds too, but that can't be helped.

Two things I would like to to try. Please visit www.pipschoice.com and check out the food.  There is a lot of info on that site that will make you become an educated consumer. This food is all natural, holistic, made fresh and delivered right to your home. My dogs get nothing else, that's how much I trust it.  Next, find out about NuVet Plus - it is a supplement that helps boost your dog's immune system to help guard against him picking up any unwanted diseases or illness.  You will need an order code to get that, you may use mine 42299. or go to www.nuvet.com/42299

Hope this helps you and please let me know if I can be of further assistance. info@spottsgrooming.com

QUESTION: Thank you Susan.
The diarrhea happened well after he was eating 100% of EVO... I think its just too rich for him.
Anyway, on the tear stains, other than food, what do you recommend I do. I've heard of Angel Eyes and other stuff. Does that work? Is it true that switching to filtered water also helps reduce? A friend also told me to use Desitin when Im cleaning him up to prevent the stain from soaking in.
Thoughts?

Answer
Angel Eyes does work to a degree.  Stains are causes be the tiny blood cells in the tears and this leaves a brownish color this also creates bacteria and sometimes yeast growth. The eyes are watering enough to cause the stain.  This condition is called epiphora. Tear staining can be traced to health and diet, allergies is usually the main reason.

Don't use Desitin.  There are harmful ingredients use in this product and SHOULD NOT be use on anybody, including babies.

Change your dog's diet and see what happens.
