Question
I have a 5 month male yorkie that was given to me by a lady who is a breeder but a friend of the family. She's been breeding for years so I trust her but im concerned. before she gave us the pup she said that the tail had just been re docked due to improper cut the first time. He was home for about a week when he began chewing and eventually cut through his tail skin.. We bought him a cone and are using a human over the counter antibiotic...Im not sure how long til it will heal and if i need to take him to the vet??? due to finances the vet is my last option..(dont want to give up so soon) ....sad for pup!! Although he seems to be fine other than that.

Answer
Hello Dawn,

How sad! Put an antibiotic like Neosporin ointment on several times a day.  Wrap the wound in some vet-wrap (gauze tape) and treat this for about 10 days. Continue to use the cone so your pup doesn't pull the bandage off.

Remember to check often to be sure the wound is healing, but if you see that it is red, watery or has a yellow discharge(indicating infection) take to your vet.

Hope this helps you dog to recover very fast, it's got to hurt.  Poor baby.
