Question
i have a friend who said that he fixed his male pit bull by using a rubber band, is that safe? can i do t to my dog?

Answer
Dear Stephen,

Thank you for writing to me.  Although this is a method that is used in rural parts of the world, in my opinion, your friend is acting irresponsibly.  This is the 21st century.  We don't have to use ancient methods when there are sanitary procedures for surgery.  If he didn't consult with his vet first, get a tetanus shot for the dog etc, then he's bordering on abuse and endangering his dog.   If not done by an experienced person, under sanitary conditions with the propery innoculations, the dog may experience long term medical problems because of this or even death.  I thank you for writing to me about this because I would hate to see this archaic method passed down to more people and their innocent dogs who don't deserve to be treated by primitive methods.  I've met people who pull their own teeth with a pliers and a bottle of vodka but would I do this or recommend it?  Absolutely not.  Take your dog to your vet, ask for the simple and less expensive procedure and let 21st century medicine work for your pooch.  There are discount coupons that you can get from Friend of Animals, on line.

Please be kind to your dog.  He is not an object.  He has emotions and can experience pain.  He trusts you to do the right thing.  Please don't let him down.

Regards,
Shelley Davis
