How much and what kind of food is best for a lab puppy?

Question
Hi.  I just adopted a 17 week, 31 lb male yellow lab.  He is up to date on all shots and not yet neutered.  The former owners were feeding him Purina Puppy Chow once a day and were not clear on the exact amount they were giving him.  Should I continue with the Purina?  Also, how much and how often should he be fed?  Thanks for your time!

Answer
The only real disadvantage of the Purina is the larger, softer stools it produces along with having to feed more.  Better dog owners feed 2 meals a day to at least 6 months.  You will read different advice on the Purina elsewhere, but nothing factual or rational to back it.  Likely the package suggests 4-5 cups a day, a good place to start.

Corn isn't bad for your dog. Meat based food is fine if you want it, but dogs can thrive and may enjoy the bulkier corn based food.

You should be feeding a puppy chow now. Switching to an adult chow for the larger breeds at 4 months, slows growth and helps develop sturdier joints.

Your dog definitely should be narrower at the waist than the hips and chest. You should be able to easily feel the ribs, but not see them. Each dog is different. Standard recommendations are a good place to start, but each dog must have its food and exercise adjusted to its individual needs. If the easier clean up is an issue to you, you should switch to a common brand such as Iams or Pro Plan.  Whatever adult chow you switch to, do so slowly over a week.
