How old before breeding

Question
My boyfriend and I have a 6 month old male pug named Saban. We would like to breed him, but we do not know how old he should be before we start attempting to look for a female for him. How old should a pug be before they can begin to breed and how do we find a safe, trusting family to leave him with as he breeds with the female?

Answer
Whew!  This is a big one. First of all, ANY reputable breeder will only want to mate their bitch with a CHAMPION stud. This means he should be a show dog and have his Champion title. Secondly, you should wait until he is old enough to know if he has any inheritable conditions such as: allergies, luxating patellas, pigmentary keratitis (not sure how to spell this one), hip displasia (can't spell this one either), or allergic to vaccinations,  etc. He should probably be at least 2 yrs of age before you know any of this.

Now, having said the above, the longer he is un-neutered the more at risk he is for testicular cancer, marking his territory(which means your walls, furniture and anything else he comes close to.) Also, other dogs will be more apt to be aggressive to him because of the testosterone.

We have run a non-profit pug rescue for over 10 years now. In 2006, we rescued 63 unwanted or abandoned pugs. We are just a small mom and pop rescue who have saved the lives of hundreds of pugs and found them new homes. One or more of your puppies could end up in a kill shelter or simply unwanted. Please do your research before attempting to add to the pet over population. Pug puppies are absolutely adorable but not every one loves them like you and I do.

Thanks for your question and good luck.
