Question
QUESTION: Hello,
Ms/Mrs.Kim
I am contacting you because at this time I am totally confused as to if we can give our toy poodle fruits and vegetables? If so, what are some of the fruits and vegetables we can give him and which ones can't he have? And do they have to cooked vegetables or puree for him?  And is raw vegetables okay? And can he have watermelon? I have been online for most of the day and I am confused. Some said yes and some say no!!! And is garlic good to give a puppy/dog? And if so, what does it do? One article said one of the things it helps with was keeping fleas off of your pet. Is that true? Last question he has had some problems going to #2 what can we do to make it better for him to go to the bathroom? I think we were giving him the wrong food. I brought Eukanuba Adult instead of  the Eukanuba Puppy. That was my fault normally my sister gets his food. Would giving him that Adult brand have made him have a hardtime going #2? Or was it the treating? He would get a treat everytime he went to the bathroom. As a reward for going outside. And he would get one of the following eachtime he went (like 3/4 times a day): Milk Bone, cookies from Petco in the bar, Slim Jim's the ones for dogs or Ice Cream for dogs. I just wanted to let you know what he was getting for treats. And he also would get the rawhide bone/balls with the meat in them. But this was just something he would eat and play with. Now he didn't get the rawhides all the time.  Was that too many treats a day and because he would go #1 sometimes #2 almost everytime he went outside. So, we would reward him. But lately he has been having a hardtime taking a #2. Please help u to help our baby boy. We can't stand to see him like this and the fruits and vegetables we would like to give him people food here and there but we don't know if it's healthy to do so!!! He's 9 months old.

ANSWER: Hello Stacie,
First off, its Ms. Kim, and I will answer all three of your questions here so I don't have to answer all of them on a different page.

There are many different fruits and Vegetables that are ok for dogs to eat.  I have a Std Poodle that loves baby carrots and I know of a Great Dane that will eat cucumbers.  Potatos are ok also as long as you cook them first and use them in moderation.  Sweet Potatos are even more healthy than white or yellow potatos and have a flavor that dogs love.  Any of the dark green vegetables are healthy for your dog, as are many of the crunchy Vegetables.  DO STAY AWAY FROM ONIONS BECAUSE THEY ARE TOXIX TO DOGS!!  Garlic is ok to use in treat recipes, but don't give it straight. Apples are a good fruit to give dogs and most dogs enjoy them also.

If your dog is having problems going #2, you should try putting some olive oil on his food to help move things some.  If you can find it, use Sardines in Olive Oil.  For your dog, use about 1/2 a can every other day until things are "moving" better.
You can also soak your dogs food to make it a bit softer, only do this every other day rather than everyday because your dog needs the crunchy food to help remove plaque and tartar from his teeth.

Blueberries are ok for dogs to eat in small amounts, just don't overdo it.  Too much of a good thing can become a bad thing.  Citrus fruits such as oranges, limes, grapefruits, are unhealthy for dogs and can cause them stomach upset.  Its best to stay away from these fruits.
Yeast is not good for dogs, but they can have cooked breads and homemade treats.  You can find some good homemade dog treats on the Web by typing "Homemade Treats for Dogs" into your search engine.
The treats you are giving him now are ok for him, but he would love you better if you made him some special treats with Love from your home.
Rawhide is bad for your dog though because it can become lodged in your dogs throat and cause a choking hazard.

As far as Sugar goes, its just as bad for dogs as it is for people.  It can cause dogs to become overweight, can cause tooth loss, and is unhealthy to their bodies.  Dogs can also become addicted to Sugar and will start to crave it, so its best to stick to the healthy foods for your dog.
Here is a website that will help you recognize foods that are unsafe for your puppy.  http://www.peteducation.com/article.cfm?cls=2&cat=1939&articleid=1030

I hope this helps you some and covers all the items listed.

Talk to you soon,
Kim

QUESTION: Hello,
Ms. Kim
Can he have watermelon? And what does the garlic do for dogs?

Answer
Hello again,
Watermelon should be ok in smaller amounts because its mostly water.  For this reason though make sure you don't give your dog too much because they can get diarreha because of all the water.

Garlic will repel fleas and some say ticks.  I use it in treats that I make for my dogs, but again, use it sparingly.
