Question
I have a 9 week old male puppy. We have had him a week. Fed him rice and burger until last friday when we started to introduce Blue chicken and rice kibble for large breed puppies. 2/3 of a cup mixed 2x a day. He has had more frequent poops and they are cream soup textured and a few are more watery and explosive. He started this right after we started to introduce the food. Is this normal and how long might this go on and when should we be concerned? He seems normal otherwise. He is 10 lbs.

Answer
Hello Deb,
It is normal for a dog to go through a diarrhea stage when switching foods.  What is best to do, is to mix his new food with what you have already been feeding him.  Mix some of the rice and hamburger with the Chicken and Rice kibble and see if this will help him.
Usually, diarrhea will last about a week or so when you switch foods abruptly.  I give my dog Kao-Pectate or Pepto Bismol to help their stomachs.  For a dog your dogs size, I would give 2 cc.
If his diarrhea continues for 3 more days, I would schedule an appt with your Vet, as it could be something more serious.

I hope this helps you some.  If you have other questions for me, please feel free to ask.
