gentian violet ear remedy

I read your info on the gentian violet solution remedy for chronic ear infection and thought I'd finally found the answer to my dog's problem. The only thing is, when I apply it to his ear he yelps and whines like he never has with any of the other  things I've used. (Ear cleaning solution, antibiotic cream, etc...) Should it hurt him this much? He can be a bit of a wimp, but he's starting to try to get away from me when he sees me with the bottle, something he's never done in the  years since I've been treating his ear infections. Is it possible that he may have abrasions of some kind in his ears that the alcohol is causing to burn? Should I insist that he suck it up or bring him back to the Vet for another temporary solution of anitbiotics?

I am sorry, but you must have me confused with somebody else.  If you asked me about ear infections, I am sure I would have suggested to work with your vet or if he isn't solving the problem, find one that can.  I would never suggest an alternative remedy such as that.
