Great Dane Muscle Spasms post-spaying

Question
Dear Ken,

I would really appreciate some input on something. My great dane pup went in yesterday to be spayed, the operation was a success, no report of any issues, but since she got home she has been having muscle spasms, initially relatively constant, thereafter in waves. They seem to decrease when she is alert, but as soon as she relaxes they are back. We have had the vet in, late last night he gave her valium, and left us with some diazepam to give her anally after the valium wore off, both of which helped, but the spasms came back each time. He has returned today, and given her morphine, which has for the first time prompted her to eat and socialise, but yet again the spasms are back. A friend maintains she is just coming off the General Anaesthetic, but we are worried.

Do you have any knowledge of this or similar?

Thanks

Kind Regards

Olivia

Answer
Nwever come across this problem, maybe the vet hit a nerve or something.

Question, when you say pup do you mean she was under a year old?  We never recommend having dogs spayed until 2-3 months after the first season, which mean about 14-15 months.  Speying too ealy stops the development.
