Dachshund that I dont know what to do with

Question
I have a four-year old dachshund that still pees in the house sometimes. I will walk around and see pee spots in random places in the house. I crate him and scold him but it doesn't seem to be working. I don't want to get rid of him but I don't know what to do. Would neutering him help? I walk him every 4 hours and he always appears fine. Any advice?

Answer
Neutering would help but not immediately after neutering and even then it might not completely get rid of the problem.   He is used to doing it now and he is marking.  I would get him neutered, it will help.  It takes up to 30 days for the testosterone to go.  It does sound like a marking problem which full males do have.  I have one that was neutered when he was older and he will pee if I do not watch him, but once I have yelled at him about it, he will stop.  You can try getting the adult size puppy pads for the floor, stomp your foot and yell at him when he even thinks about lifting his leg, and try to determine when he is doing this.  Is he housebroken almost all the time, does he do this when left alone, is he upset when he sprays, been around a strange dog, had another dog in the house, etc.  This can help pinpoint behavior issues.  You want him to understand that it is a no no.  Clean the areas really good where he has been peeing because the smell will bring him back.
