bulldog smell

QUESTION: My dog smells, I clean his nose rope often, I think there is a smell from the eyes, but not sure. My car stinks, my house has an odor. I take him to the groomer to be cleaned every month. His eyes get a little gooey, but i wipe them often . Its not coming from the tail pocket. He is a great dog, this is killing me!

ANSWER: This may sounds a bit odd, but start giving him one TUMS a day. Disguise it with cheese if necessary. TUMS will level the pH in your dog's system and not only will his tear stains go away but the odor associated with it will too. It takes about 2 weeks to notice a difference and you will have to continue this forever or he will eventually return to his stinky self.

The TUMS are not harmful to the dog at all.

not sure if there are tear stains because brown color skin, but is it common for eye goo to smell?

You can't see what's going on because of his color but yes, the drainage from the eyes has an odor, a musky, heavy odor. It might not be a bad idea to have a vet take a look at his eyes to see if he has any entropion going on which would cause his eyes to tear more than normal. This can be corrected with minor surgery if necessary. Not only would he feel better, but smell better too!
