Question
QUESTION: our 1yr old bulldog has a brownish leakage from her rectum and smells really bad. 1 Vet says that there is nothing to do, another is wanting to try and do a tail docking ? Any suggestions ???
ANSWER: I can't imagine what leakage would have to do with her tail unless it's coming from the tail itself and not the rectum. If the tail is absessed, it will definitely smell and be very uncomfortable for the dog. When this is the case, usually the tail has to be amputated, not just docked. Have you had her anal glands expressed? If not, do that and see if it helps.

You  might also take her for a second opinion.

One more thought, what are you feeding her?

QUESTION: We are feeding her IAMS food. We have had her to 3 different Vet's. one thought we just need to treat her
like a baby wiping after she comes in the house each time, the other gave the girls (at college)sometype of a syringe to clean out her rectum, then now the vet that wants to do this procedure. Harley really does not have a tail to wag (don't know what you call it),But I did call the person were we do Harley (she has 5 dogs herself) to see if she had ever had this problem, and she said yes, her vet had told her it's like some type of yeast infection around the tail. I just wiped around her tail and got some (not much) brownish on the tissue.  I know this is really hard to explained. THANKS !  Just not for sure we need this procedure, would really like the smell to go away !!!

Answer
This is called a "tight tail" and they are very problematic. You can take a wipe and dig right in under the tail right up to your second knuckle to clean it out. If you can handle this a couple of times a week, you just might solve your problem. Otherwise, amputation is the only permanent solution.
