English bulldog health issues

Question
I'm thinking about getting an English bulldog and I hear that they are one of the worst breeds in terms of frequent medical issues.  Is this true or overstated?  What type of issues should I prepare for?  Also, would you recommend that I get pet insurance, and if so, what type is the best?

Answer
The most common health issues you could expect would be having to do with their eyes. That's something no breeder can guarantee. Skin issues and allergies are another. Rather than seeking pet insurance, seek out a reputable breeder who will offer you a generous health guarantee, a year is good. Ask for a veterinary reference and speak with the vet to see what health issues that breeder has experienced.  There are some great healthy bulldogs but there is a huge amount of crap out there these days. Use your best judgment and don't be in a rush to get a puppy. If something doesn't feel right, it probably isn't.
