Coughing after soft pallet removal

19 16:25:07

Question
I have a female English Bulldog we think she is just over a year old (she was a rescure). We had her soft pallet removed about a month ago and ever since she has this hacking cough (usally only in the morning when she wakes up). It sounds like she is trying to cough up flim. The vet told us is could be from the tube the put in her throat when they put her to sleep. He also told up that her soft pallet was the longest and thickest that he had ever seen. So I was just wondering if you have ever heard of this happening and if so does this cough go away?

Thank You

Leesa

Answer
Yes, this is perfectly normal after this type of surgery. Not only is there irritation from the breathing tube, but there is trauma to the pallet and airway over and above that. It will eventually go away.

If she sounds raspy in the morning, give her a shot of lemon juice toward the back of her throat. That will cause her to salivate and dislodge any phlem sticking around. Use a "squeezy lemon" from the grocery store.
