Question
I have 2 boxers a male and a female, We bred them last year he was 3 years old and the female was 2. She ended up having only one puppy which died 4 days later, anyway she is coming into heat very soon. My question is, is there any chance that this will happen again? Is it possible that something may be wrong with him? Should I even take another chance? I just don't want this to happen again I don't want to go through it again, should I just get him neutered? oh and this was the first time we ever bred them. The vet said she was in great health to breed her so I don't get what went wrong, please help!!

Answer
Before you breed, you need to study the process from A to Z.

There is more to breeding than mating them.

You need to be an "expert" in her pregnancy issues: proper maternity diet and care, gestation period, emotional issues, and preparing a whelping box.

You need to be an "expert" in whelping. (delivering) How to whelp. The process of whelping. What to look for, temperature changes, how to help her, how to cut the puppies' cord if she doesn't know how or won't, how to take a pup away from her so she can have another pup; the signs of danger-- when to call a vet; the emergencies that could arise and how to notice them. There is a million things to learn and know--  and a million things to buy and have for the whelping-- Unwaxed dental floss and hemostats for cutting the cord- and HOW to cut the cord (else they hemorage and die if done incorrectly), sterilizing: alcohol and surgical cleaner, glucose booster for mom, towels and cloths, heating pad: basket with blankets and heating pad placed under blankets and basket draped with blankets for newborns immediately after birth during whelping----

You need to be an "expert" in caring for newborn pups. They can not regulate their body temperatures until over 1 week old- usually around 2 weeks old. How to keep them warm and safe, how to feed them and what to feed them if mom doesn't have milk, how to handle them, the birth weight process; increasing and the signs of problems.

You need to be an "expert" in her postwhelping emotional health and issues, what to feed her after she delivers, how to manage her, keeping the father away from her and the puppies, etc.

There is a vast area from mating to caring for healthy puppies and all in between that you must know.

It is critical.

The pup she had probably died 4 days later because of temperature irregularity. The puppies have to have 98 degree temperatures with no drafts.

Google "mating" Google "how to make a whelping box" Google "whelping" Google "dies for pregnant bitch" Google " emergency signs in whelping" Google "caring for newborn puppies."

Learn all and everything you can before proceeding with mating.
