Dry nose

Question
Our male boxer had a dry nose so we thought he might be sick.  His nose is now wet in front but on the top of his nose his skin looks irritated, like it is bumpy.  The bumps are raised Really High and are very hard and dry.  in the transitional area (from top to front) his nose is turning white.  Have you ever heard of this before? And if so how do you treat this?

Answer
A dry nose is very much like chapped lips, typically a lack of good moisture in the body and indicative of dry skin. Heat in summer, and dryness in winter can cause it.

Make sure he's getting plenty of water and you may want to add a bit of elecrolyte (like Pediolyte) to his water.

You can buy a balm at a discount store, pet store, or a feedstore. Ask for Bag Balm.  It's in a green tin. It was originally designed for chapped cow udders, but is used as an  all purpose medicine.

You might want to make some phone calls to see if the store(s) offer it first.

If you can't find the balm, use Vaseline on his nose. Rub it all over. He will lick for sure, but keep on trying.

His nose will look better, feel better, and get lubricated more as you use either the balm or Vaseline.
