Male marking on female

Question
My 2 boxers are brother and sisters. A few weeks ago my male started marking on our bed and now he is stating to mark on our female as she is squatting. Is there anything we can do to prevent this. They both have obedience training and are potty trained. We have a large backyard and they tend to go to the far back of the lot to do their business. This makes it hard to catch him and correct his actions. Any suggestions?

Answer
Hi Ciegi,

Your boy is only being dominant and 'marking' his territory, so-to-speak.  Unless you restrict his access to the toilet area or let them out separately, there's not a lot you can do.  You must catch him in the act to correct him.  Usually a loud clap or a rattle of a can with pennies inside would be enough.  Or a whistle...anything that makes noise.  Once he's distracted you can tell him 'eh-eh' and then praise when he moves away from her.

If he's not neutered and still young, that may help as well.  Look into the NILF method of dog training.  Some dogs tend to be less dominant with each other when they see their owner as the ultimate leader.  :)  If you google 'NILF' you'll come up with several sites.
