Question
I have a 12wk old white male boxer and he cant seem to controll his bladder he pees all the time when he gets exicted and in his sleep. i took him to the vet and they said they only way to fix it would have to be surgery but i dont want to go through surgery unless i absoltly have too. I was wondering if this was something that he can grow out of and gain better controll as he gets older?

Answer
Hi Samantha,

Why did the vet say he needed surgery?  Did they diagnose him with a specific problem?

Peeing when excited is submissive urination.  That can be outgrown and also controlled by you (your actions and excitement level) until then.

Peeing in sleep is also something that can be outgrown.  My mutt did this sporadically until he was 18 months old.  I'd never have thought to have him get surgery.

Again...is your guy diagnosed with something?  A non-functioning sphincter muscle can cause uncontrolled urination but you would notice him to be incontinent.  Drips behind him as he walked.  I'm a bit baffled that your vet wants to jump to surgery.
