My female boxer Matty is very tiny, should I be concerned

Question
I have a 12 week old boxer female and she weights about 10 pound and is very skinny. You can see her ribs and I am feeding her 3 times a day about a 1/2 can 1/2 dry. Should I be doing something else. If she drinks to much water she will regurgitate it. Is that normal? Have you ever heard of an enlarged esophagus?

Answer
Hi Ryan,

I can't tell you if it's normal for your girl or not, unfortunately.  People get very hung up on proper weight but truly, a dog should only be in proportion (weight v. structure).

At 12 weeks old you are correct to be feeding her 3x a day but you've not told me how much dry you're feeding.  Look on the back of your food bag and find the rec. amount for a puppy.  That amount should be split into 3.  Your cans should also say how much a puppy needs, daily, when combined with dry.

I have not heard of or dealt with an enlarged esophagus.  That doesn't mean it's not a medical condition, just one thing that I've not had to deal with...thank goodness.

I would suggest, strongly, that you take her to her vet and have them weigh her.  Tell them how much and how often you're feeding.  They may want to test her for parasites (including worms) and/or other maladies that could be causing her to be thin.
