Question
We have a one-year old Boxer (Stella) whom we adore.  While she is far from perfect, behaviour-wise, she's getting better everyday.

Our problem, is that Stella has a "gas" problem.  We've tried several different foods, and she rarely gets treats.  Nothing seems to help, and she always has very smelly gas.  Any suggestions?

Thanks.

Answer
Hi Heather,

You're already doing about all you can...not the answer you wanted probably.

Gas in dogs is usually caused by cheaper foods with grain and fillers...Dog Chow, Iams, Pedigree, etc.  Most of the foods you can find in a grocery store.

On the other side of the coin...sometimes foods that are more expensive can be too rich.

You can try a different protein source...if she's gassy on chicken, try a beef or venison based food.  If she's gassy on a cheaper food, go with a higher quality one.

My guys seem to do worse on the cheaper and on the higher end.  I've found that they do well on Nature's Recipe and/or Chicken Soup.

Don't forget that it takes a month or two for a dog to adjust to a new food.  So if you're switching too rapidly, that may cause gas as well.
