Question
I have a year old unfixed (soon to be fixed) female boxer.  I have had her since she was 6 weeks old.  My husband and I both work but we have been leaving her out of her crate for the past 3-4 months with no problem from her chewing and destroying ANYTHING!  All of a sudden, within the past 3 days when I get home she has started a trend of tearing apart magazines and CDs on shelves.  These items are not laying around and most of them are where she has to jump to reach them.  She has fresh water, LOTS of toys, and goes outside to play for atleast 1-2 hours a day-not counting play time inside with me or my husband.  I have never had this issue with her before.  Nothing has changed in the household-not even our work schedules.  When I come home after being gone a total of 3-4 hours (I work only part time) she has pulled CDs off a shelf and basically torn them to shreds!  I don't want to have to start crating her again but I don't know what else to do?  Also this might sound dumb, but I think she knows what she is doing is wrong because as soon as I walk in the door-or even see the mess she runs and hides under the bed!!  When anyone is at the house she only chews on her toys and nothing else-what the heck am I supposed to do, just crate her?

Answer
Has she been in season yet?  She may be coming in, or if she was in within the past few months she may be experiencing a false pregnancy.  Hormones go crazy from a few weeks before a season to about 18 weeks after.  The other consideration is that it may be separation anxiety, which is not as easy to deal with as a season!  If it is SA, Patricia McConnell has a good book on the subject called "I'll Be Home Soon".  There's also an article with a number of suggestions and resources here:

Good luck!!
