Question
I have a male boxer that will be turning 2 in 1 month. 1 month ago he was nutured and weighed 66 pounds. Now he weighs 74 pounds. I feed him once a day a scoop in a half of royal canin at night. I put 1 cup of water with artificial chicken or meat flavoring and sprinkle cheese on top. Sometimes i add a hard boiled egg also. I do not feed him in the morning, because i live in Miami and don't feel comfortable most days leaving him outside in the heat so he has to be in the crate for a work day. He likes his food wet and realize the artificial flavoring may not be the right answer. Also, i take him to training once a week and he consumes about 3 peperoni sticks there and at least 1 everyday to practice his training. He also has about 4 to 5 bones of some sort laying around the house for him. Please let me know if this is a healthy weight for my boxer and if i am feeding him the best way i can. Thank you

Answer
The best way to determine if your Boxer is at a healthy weight is by his condition; he should be lean, with the last two ribs just visible, and when you feel his rib cage, it should feel like the back of your hand.  If you have to press in to feel his ribs, he's too heavy; if his spine or hips are prominent, he's too thin.

There are many opinion on the "best" way to feed a dog, but in general a high-quality diet with occasional healthy additions is appropriate; the flavoring is a bit worrisome because these are often high in sodium, as is much processed cheese.  A good site for learning about quality kibbles is www.dogfoodanalysis.com - a good site about feeding dogs in general is www.dogaware.com

Good luck!!
