My boxer Maggie turned 2 April 1st and I've had her since she was 7 weeks old. She is a very healthy and sturdy reverse brindle. She has only had one heat cycle which was over 16 months ago. I've had boxers for over 25 years but only one female during this time. Is this common?

Answer
Dogs heat cycle is every 5-6 months; twice a year.

If she has not had normal cycles, she could have thyroid problems preventing cycles. Thyroid disorder can cause interrupted cycles and miscarriages as well as sterility; the inability to get pregnant.

Have you vet run the thyroid blood test. Thyroid medicine will treat the disorder, but she will have to be checked once a year to adjust medication and will be on medicine her entire life.

I have one Boxer girl that takes thyroid medicine "Pala-Tech chewables" and has had three litters in her lifetime.
