Question
My boxer is two years old and her gums are bright pinkish redish is that normale.

Answer
Hi Damon,

Boxer gums should be a healthy pink color, ranging from bubble gum to a darker coral/salmon pink color, and will often become darker pink/reddish with exertion (running, fast play, long walks, etc.). The capillary refill time should be 1.5 seconds -- if you press your thumb on her gums and then remove it, the white spot made by your thumb should turn pink again in that time. (This article about capillary refill time also includes a photo of normal pink gum color: http://www.peteducation.com/article.cfm?c=0+1302+1473&aid=1164)

If her gums are red around the teeth, that indicates periodontal disease -- a vet check is a good idea, and you should start brushing her teeth daily to prevent progression of the problem (and potentially reverse it).

Typically in Boxers pale gums are a bigger issues, because of the heart problems in the breed. Bright cherry-red gums may indicate a problem, as well, often a system infection, overheating, or carbon monoxide exposure.

If this gum color is a sudden change, it's probably a good idea to visit the vet just to be sure everything is OK, especially if you've noticed any other changes in her behavior.

Good luck!
