Lumps on my Boxer

Question
Hi my 18 month old Boxer dog has some lumps on each side of his body aswell as his legs. I cant see any scabs or bite marks and there is no bleeding but he has been scratching a little more than usual. What do you think this is?

Answer
This sounds like a flea allergy. Fleas bite, and an allergic dog will get bumps.

Or, it can be food allergies. Food allergies cause skin bumps and itching too.

Be sure to feed him an all natural dog food with no corn and no corn glutens. You can check the ingredients on dog foods at your local pet stores like PetCo and PetSmart, or Google "all natural dog food" online. Select one without corn and corn gluten fillers. Check for your local distributor.

You can give him Benadyl for the itching and swelling. He should weigh around 65-75 lbs. ( administer up to 1mg/lb every 8 hours (or 3 times a day ). So if you have a 20 lb. dog, it's 20 mg. This is higher than the equivalent dose for humans, but nevertheless seems to be the accepted dose for dogs. If he weighs 65lbs. you can give him 65mg. Call your vet and check with him.

You can bath him in an oatmeal bath; get a oatmeal shampoo made for dogs, and this helps reduce itching as well.

If the food change doesn't stop the bumps within a few weeks-- take him to your vet to have it checked.

Thyroidism can cause skin problems too.

Check to make sure he didn't get into ants in your back yard or any other type of insect too.
