Question
I just got my daughter who is 6 her dream dog a white boxer. The breeder
told me at her last vet visit they heard a very very slight heart mumor, I
took her to a vet today and she said she heard it and on a scale of 1-6 she
said it's a 1 1/2 should I be worried? my last dog a Boston had a mumor
and she grew out of it. Do most Boxers grow out of it? and is it good that
ii's very slight about a 1 1/2?

Answer
Hi Renee,

While you're a great mother (mine got me a goldfish!) I do hope you realize that in all truth, you just got yourself a Boxer.  There have been studies done that show a child is 'ready' for the responsibilities of a dog between the ages of 8 and 10.  I know this wasn't part of your question, but as we see 'my child isn't taking care of HER dog' as a reason for owner surrender in rescue, I did want to mention it.

Your vet will probably want to check the puppy every 6 months or so (after all of the initial vaccination visits).  Most Boxer puppies do outgrow their murmurs...dome don't.  Unfortunately, there's no way to tell which will and which won't.  A very good indicator, however, is the heart scores of the parents.  Do you know what they were?

Yes, it's good that it's slight for now.  Again, dependent upon the parents heart scores, this could be a problem in the making or could be something very minor.

Your next step should be to contact the breeder, find out what the scores were for the sire and dam and give that information to your vet.  If the breeder knows the heart score of the grandparents (they should) get that as well.

Good luck!
