Question
I have taken on a beautiful 12wk pup called Lola, she is loving, gentle and playful, she has not had a good start in life, being shipped to order to a Pet Shop, then bought from there, kept for 3 days and given away.  Now she's mine and staying..... I was concerned as she had dioreah with blood in it, and a fever, I took her to the vet who said she had a gastric intestine virus and put her on antibiotics, gave her a painkiller and put her on rice and chicken for a week, I did this to the letter and returned to be told her temp is still high, so they put her on another 7 days of antibiotics, they also said she had an infection in her ear due to mites and gave me drops.  I am really concerned as to whether this is curable or has she got a long term illness, in all other aspects she appears fine.  The vet appears a little vague even though I ask lots of questions and now I got to finish this course and take her back again!! in the meantime they were unable to finish her vacinations and have said that once the diareohh has gone then they will start them again and to continue to keep her inside.  I could really do with some additional information or relevent questions to ask.  I hope you can help me and my adorable Lola.

Answer
Hi Amanda. The problem with pet store puppies is that you really don't know where they come from, and what health issues they may have. I'm not yelling, just saying. :-) Does she have any vomiting at all? If so, I would suspect coccidia. You may want to ask about that. If that's what she does have, then Albon is the drug of choice. If you're not getting your questions answered, or feel that your dog isn't getting the best of care, it's time to find a different vet. I would be concerned that the dog is being kept on antibiotics without you really knowing what's going on. Dogs build up a resistance to them just like we do. You need to find out from the vet what the name of the illness is so that you can do more research. When you find it out, you can contact me, and I'll be more than happy to help. Find out what it's called. You can then contct a different vet and ask them what the best course of action for it would be. This way, you'll know for sure if the first vet is treating it correctly. Don't be afraid to get a second opinion, or even to change vets if need be. I'm not saying that the first vet isn't doing the right thing, but if you're left out in the dark on this, then something's not right.
