10 Year Old Boxer with Hip Displaysia

Question
My 10 year old boxer, The Angel Gabriel or BoBo as we know and love him has severe hip trouble.  My vet said there is nothing I can do to make it better and I am not willing to accept this.  He is starting to have real trouble walking, jumping, getting into and out of the car and house, going potty.  His legs just slip out from under him, he can't stand for long, he  can't stand on his hind legs.  I currently help him in and out of bed, the car, the house, etc.  Is there anything I can do to reverse this.  Do I have any options other than surgery.  Please help me.

Answer
Cynthia,

If it's severe, there is not a whole lot you can do.

That said, if you're not ready to accept this, get a second opinion!  Because one vet says something doesn't make it gospel.  BoBo should have xrays taken (if he hasn't) to determine the severity of the hip displaysia.

At the very least, he can be given pain controlling medication (such as rimadyl) or steroids.

If there is no remedy for him, you need to consider whether he's in constant pain and needs to be euthanized.  Of course, this would be a consideration only after all other options are ruled out.  You have to remember, animals don't show weakness or pain until the last moment.  To show weakness is to be vulnerable...this is ingrained in them.  If he appears to be in pain, he's in a great deal of pain.

I hope that you can get him sorted!
