Question
Hi! My husband and I are wondering if we should get another boxer? Currently, we have Lola, a 2yr old spayed female boxer, and are thinking about adding a female boxer pup to the family. The breeder has suggested I rethink housing 2 females as they are prone to fighting. I have NEVER had any behavioral issues with Lola..especially with other dogs!! She LOVES other dogs, male or female! I'm nervous now! please help!
THANKS!!

Answer
Generally speaking, an opposite-sex pair is the best bet.  Two males are more likely to fight, but two females, if they do fight, are more likely to cause serious damage and to hold a grudge - if two bitches get into a real fight, odds are you'll never be able to put them together again.

That said, I know of numerous examples of multiple females that get along quite well, and some opposite-sex pairs that don't; it's really more dependent on the personalities of the individual dogs, rather than any specific gender combination.  Bringing in a puppy, rather than an adult, can help, as the older resident dog can teach the puppy the ropes; as well, a less-assertive puppy is less likely to try to vie for top dog spot, which is generally when the problems occur.  The fact that Lola is spayed can also diminish the chance of problems; many fights are over breeding rights, or triggered by hormonal changes, and spaying eliminates those triggers.

Good luck!
