Question

Boxer Patches
Hi Jannie

Great helpful site!!

We have an 8 month boxer bitch who developed patches with some hair loss and scabbing after she was Spayed. We took her to vet to check for mites, but all clear. Is this just a seasonal thing? She is a bit "clingy" maybe nerves? any suggestions welcome. Attached a picture showing patches which have scabbed and turned white on neck.

Note, we have a large bushy garden and she plays like mad with our other 3 year old boxers (rushing through bushes etc ... at first I thought it was just scratches).

Many Thanks
John.

Answer
"Black spot" is a disease of the skin. Usually it is in other breeds and not the Boxer breed. It has to do with longer hair and not shedding properly, etc. Also, it can be a fungus. If your environmental area is moist and humid, fungus is more likely. Your vet can skin test for that.

Or, it could be thyroid problems and a simple blood test will tell. The vet takes blood from an artery in the neck and tests it. If she has a thyroid imbalance, daily, inexpensive medicine controls the imbalance. It should be checked again soon after to make sure the dosage is working correctly and re-tested yearly or every other year, or when more changes occur.

It could be skin allergies from diet. Put her on a natural dog food that does not contain corn and any corn glutens-- any kind of glutens. Boxers are sensitive to corn and some other ingredients.

I do recommend taking her to your vet to have the black spot disease  or fungus ruled out and thyroid checked.

I tend to think it is a sign of a thyroid imbalance. Please let me know what your vet diagnoses in a follow-up.
