Question
QUESTION: Hi Jennie,

If you remember me. I have a boxer pup who is 18 weeks old. I have been researching to get her to eat a high quality premium Kibble . I was on Eukunuba and heard bad reviews . Iam planning to switch her gadually to a product called " Eagle Pack select Holistic" . Have you heard of it and what is your suggestion?

Thanks,
Shilpa.

ANSWER: I have heard of it, and it has corn in in. Here is the link to the puppy food ingredients:

http://www.eaglepack.com/SP_SMPuppy.html

Dick Van Patten (the actor) Natural Balance Pet Foods is what I recommend.

Ingredients do not contain corn or any glutens. Here is the link- go down the page to the "ingredients" section near the bottom:

http://www.naturalbalanceinc.com/dogformulas/LambDog_LBB.html

At the top left of every page is a red "shop Online" link; it will take you to a page of distributors so you can select one that suits you. It is shipped to you. I look at all of them for pricing.

Boxers are allergic to corn and glutens. Also, just because a dog food advertises holistic or organic, does not mean they truly are. There are no governed laws pertaining to dog food advertising. They can claim what ever they want and we have no way of verifying: Always read the ingredient list. Corn is bad. All the additives and supplements are bad and some are harmful.

There is an awful lot of ingredients that I would research:

Glucosamine Hydrochloride, Yucca Schidigera Extract, DL-Methionine, Vitamin A Acetate, Vitamin D3 Supplement, Vitamin E Supplement, Riboflavin Supplement, Vitamin B12 Supplement, d-Pantothenic Acid, Niacin Supplement, Choline Chloride, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride, Thiamine Mononitrate, Folic Acid, Ascorbic Acid, Biotin, Lecithin, Rosemary Extract, Inositol, Polysaccharide Complexes of Zinc, Iron, Manganese, Copper and Cobalt, Potassium Iodate, Sodium Selenite, Lactobacillus acidophilus Lactobacillus casei, Enterococcus faecium, B. subtillus, Bacillus licheniformis, Bacillus coagulins, Aspergillus oryzae, and Aspergillus niger.

Things you DO NOT want added (beware of these, they are harmful):

Menadine Sodium Bisulfate w/K3
BHA & BHT (preservatives)
Ethoxyquin
Propylene glycol (in wet foods)
Prosphoric acid
Sorbitol
D1-Alpha Tocopheryl Acetate (synthetic vitamin E)
Glutens (corn, rice, wheat) although rice and wheat is probably alright but look for allergies just in case

(Brown rice is preferred over white)
