Black Urine

Question
Hello.  I have a 3 %26 1/2 year old reverse brindle neutered male boxer who has black urine.  I was wondering if you have any knowledge with this problem.  It was first detected about 6 weeks ago while at the kennel. They took a sample to our vet. The vet treated with antibiotics.  (suspected UTI)  We then continued a second course of the clavamox, only to find it worse.  So they then prescribed baytril (another strong antibiotic).  It has not improved.  Xray showed no stones in bladder or kidneys.  He is asymptomatic otherwise.  I believe we've stumped our vet.  We are waiting for blood results taken last friday, and she has calls in to two specialists.  But I still haven't heard back and I'm desperate for answers.  I was hoping that perhaps you've encountered this and could shed some knowledge to perhaps help direct our next steps.  When they spun the urine sample the urine was clean and normal looking.  The blood (black) separated completely and no sign of infection showed in the urinalysis.  I will look forward to your response.  Thankyou for providing help to us fellow boxer lovers!  Aspen is such a handsome happy guy!  I'd like to keep it that way and get to the bottom of this perplexing problem.

Answer
Donna,

You sound as though you are doing all that you can  to get to the bottom of this.

I've never heard of the black urine without attributing it to a kidney infection and that being blood in the urine.

Since your vets are on top of this with tests and seeking a specialist- I feel confident you will get the cause.

Hopefully, it is something simple.

Please keep me informed because I do care, and I also want the knowledge to help another Boxer owner.

I'm sorry I don't have the answer to Aspen's problem. If I run across pertinent information I will let you know.
