Question
Jannie

I would like your opinion/preference on a dog food.I am a boxer lover and have two. Male and female,I know very well that boxers are notorious for passing gas(which is funny when wife and daughter are in the room-I blame them.) anyways, I would like your opinion (professional or not)on a dog food to minimize gas. Is there one? I currently feed him Natures Recipe which claims to have no corn,no meat by products. it does have a few fillers that I could do without. Any suggestions?

Answer

Since you have 2 Boxers, both male and female, it would be whatever the common denominator is between them.

One Boxer with excessive gas could be genetics, allergies, gastric problems, etc., but 2, probably means the food.

Nature's Recipe is okay- but not the best. It does have additives.

Since you know not to give Boxers corn, corn glutens, glutens, and by-products, you are on a great start and more knowledgeable than most Boxer owners.

I would research and select one that doesn't have added ingredients, like organic or all natural, and test a duck and potato or at minimum, a chicken or lamb and rice (brown rice preferred, not white).

This will give you an opportunity to test whether the current food is causing the excess gas. Duck and potato is easiest on the digestive system, but you can try a natural or organic one specifically made for "sensitive stomachs."

Remember, grocery stores DO NOT carry quality dog food of any kind. Science Diet, Eubanka, all those, are junk too.

There is no law governing advertising on the bags of dog food; in other words, they can claim whatever they want to claim- and most is lies for their advertising marketing edge over competition.

Human grade dog food with meat being the first ingredient is best; no corn; no glutens of any kind; no additives- or at least minimal additives (some are vitamins, etc. but watch for synthetic vitamin K and E)....

(and remember, changing dog food can change bowel movements, so add new to old mixing until switched)

The best and only place to buy quality all natural or organic dog food is pet stores, and mostly Online. I order mine Online most times, but sometimes I can find it at a feed store, but they are usually out.

Select one that best suits the requirements of natural and/or organic that you can afford. They are definitely more expensive than grocery store brands- but your Boxers will be healthier, have less health problems, and live longer.

Dog and cat foods are the key to a pet's quality of life, and length of life. A quality pet food can extend your pet's life beyond the average life span, with less chance of cancers, renal (kidney) failure, liver problems, eyesight, bones, and stomach/gastric disease.
