Question
QUESTION: We have 2 boxers that we decided to breed this year, they have been together since they were really small. We thought they were never going to breed because our male didn't seem really interested. He would mount her but we never saw them tie, she was letting him mount on April 12 this was the first day that I saw her letting him. So I think if it happened it was around that day or near that date. I didn't take her to the vet thinking she wasn't pregnant because I never saw them tie, and now her nipples started getting really pink and more pronounced and seem to be filling with milk. Her vulva never went back to normal and she seems to be more clingy. She has gained a little weight around the ribs but no were else. Can she be hiding her pups up high in the rib cage? Is this possible?

I have an appointment next week, we are going to have a blood test done and if she is an x ray also to see how many we are expecting. I'm just really anxious and I really want to know.

ANSWER: Hi. She very well could be pregnant. It's hard to say for sure, as dogs also experience false pregnancies, but it sounds like she very well could be. I would treat her as if she is. Some Boxer girls carry their pups up high until whelping time gets closer. Also, she could be having a smaller litter, not many pups. That may be why she's not putting on that much weight. Good luck!

QUESTION: Its just really weird, some days I'm sure that she is pregnant and theres other days that I feel like shes not. Like today she woke up and looked less thick but she didn't eat all her breakfast, she is loosing appetite. Theres other day that she looks really thick, I'm just hoping that everything is ok and that the pups are born healthy. I've heard that the smaller the litter is higher the chance of the pups getting to big and her needing a c sec? I've just started feeding her puppy food so we'll see how this week goes.

ANSWER: Hi. It is true that a small litter can cause trouble, because they have more room to grow. The thing is to not let her get too fat, make sure she gets plenty of exercise, and I suggest getting her back on her adult food for now. You can switch her to puppy food after whelping. Puppy food can contribute to the pups getting too big. Good luck, and please let me know how it goes.

QUESTION: It turns out that she is a little less then we expected, so we are going in this weeks which is about her 7th week along to see how many pups shes having. I have the appoinment tomorrow, the things is that she has a clear stringy discharge is this normal??

Answer
Hi. I'm glad things are going well. The clear discharge is normal, a lot of pregnant dogs have it during pregnancy. If it changes to a color, and has a smell, then get her to the vet. Good luck, let me know if I can help with anything else. And please let me know how many she has.:-)
