Feeding a puppy

Question
Hi we have an 8 week old boxer puppy (male).  We were adviser to feed him 1 cup of the dry puppy food twice a day.  He doesn't seem especially interested in it and never eats it all in one go - but would eat 'most' of it if the bowl is left down and he can come back later.   Should we change things to more feedings per day of smaller amounts?  Are you aware of an online schedule of how much to feed at which age/size?
Many thanks for your help.

Answer
8 weeks old is extremely young to be on dry puppy food.

He is accustomed to his mom's milk and needs more nutrients than dry.

Also, he is like a newborn; eats every few hours- NOT twice a day. I recommend feeding adults 3-4 times a day- and recommend self-feeding for adults; food out 24/7. Not all dogs eat on schedule, and Boxers eat more at night than day, but graze all day long.

A puppy needs to be fed every 3 hours.

He needs fresh water 24/7 available to him.

This is my recommendation:

Formula

In a blender;

1 12 oz. can evaporated milk (not condensed)
1 cup whole plain yogurt (no flavors)
1 raw egg
1/2 teaspoon white syrup (like Kayro)

You can buy all generic brand (store brand ingredients to save money)

Blend in blender- do not froth, and pour into sealed container or sealed pitcher and add 6 oz. water to formula. You can't add it while blending because a blender won't hold it all.

Pour on his dry food and mash up into a mashed-potato-like mash- and feed every few hours.

You can offer him some in a bowl to drink- but do not give it to him cold; room temperature or heated slightly like mom's body temperature is. Her milk is warm like her.

This is the healthiest diet for a pup until he is 4-5 months old. He needs a mash-like food because he is not ready to chew crunchy food.

Always feed a puppy every 2-4 hours until 4-5 months old and then gauge his eating habits. I recommend feeding 4 times a day when older- but always recommend self-feeding allowing food to be available to them 24/7 once they are 5-6 months old.
