adding a Boxer puppy

Question
Good afternoon Mrs. Walker.  I asked this question earlier to one of the other experts, but wanted to get a range of oppinions if you don't mind.  Below is the question I asked that I would like your feedback on as well.

I have a 2 yr old male Boxer who is fixed and I am thinking of brining in another Boxer puppy into our home.  I would love another male, but is having two males two years apart a good idea?  Both will be fixed as well.  I have heard in the past that two females may not be the best idea, but haven't heard anything about two males.  Thanks.

Answer
Hi Russell,

In my experience, two males are more likely to fight, but two females will fight more seriously and will hold a grudge.  Opposite-sex pairs are generally the best way to stack the odds against a fight.  That said, it really does depend on the individual dogs.  If both are fixed, that generally greatly decreases the odds of a problem developing - and of course, bringing one in from puppyhood helps, too.  I think if your current male is typically laid back and respectful with other dogs, and your puppy is well-socialized to other dogs both before and after you bring it home - and not an extremely assertive-aggressive personality - then you would be fine with either sex.  It's also important that you make it clear that *you* are the one who sets and enforces the rules, clearly, consistently, and fairly.

A good book on managing a multiple-dog household is "Feeling Outnumbered" by Patricia McConnell and Karen London.

Good luck!!
