Question
our one year old female boxer has some pin head spots on the top of her head between her ears that you can see the scalp.  she also has licked/chewed the coat off her hind leg.  i am wondering if this is mange and how to treat it.  does this have anything to do with the type of food she is fed?  she gets dick van patton sweet potatoe and fish which is a high quality food.  i have been giving her yogurt on a daily basis for digestive health.  please advise.

Answer
Karen,

I can't tell you if it's mange.  She needs to go to the vet and get a skin scraping.  It would be odd for a year old dog to have actual mange but it is possible.

When a dog presents with skin issues you've never seen before, it's always a good idea to have a vet look at the problem.  This way, it can be dealt with and if it crops up again you'll know what it is.

It could be allergies, mange, a staph infection...any number of things.  Boxers are notorious for their skin issues.

It's not an emergency but I would get her in as soon as possible, if nothing else, for some treatment and relief from the itching.
