White bumps around mouth

Question
I have a male Boxer that is about 3-4 years old and we rescued him about a 1 1/2 ago.  Last week he started to get about a dozen bumps around his mouth on his lips and around his month.

Answer
Hi Daniel,
This sounds like your typical 'warts'. What kind of bowl is he eating out of? If it's plastic, switch to stainless steel. The plastic bowls harbor bacteria and allow it to grow, which doesn't help everytime he eats. (Assuming he eats out of a plastic bowl. Even those who don't commonly get this problem.) If he is eating out of a stainless steel bowl then make sure it is thoroughly washed after each use with antibacterial soap.  Because of the skin folds on a boxer it is common to have bacteria there.

Also, buy some Malaseb Pledgets from your vet. They look like those little acne pads. Wipe his chin two or three times a day, and it'll eventually go away. The moisture (from the slobber ultimately) is just causing a little folliculitis there.

If it truly looks like warts, it may be Viral Papillomas. If your pup is around other dogs in situations like training class, daycare, boarding, going to the pet store, dog park, etc... They are at increased risk. Most dogs will kill off the warts on their own. Dogs with weak immune systems can have a harder time and may need to have them surgically removed. I would have your pup examined by a vet to find out for sure what these bumps/warts are. The vet can do a skin scrape and clear an worries you may have.
