Question
QUESTION: My boxer puppy is 17 days old and weighs 1lb 3oz. I have taken him to the vet 5 days ago and he said to have him nurse as much as possible.  This is not putting any weight on him.  His 5 other siblings are 3lbs.  The vet said he is to little to give antibiotics.  His temp is normal. Pink gums.  Walking,  eyes are open and he does want to eat, he is super eager to eat but no weight gain..  I started them all on a little bit of Gerber rice cereal in the bottles because the mom is starting to
wean them.  I am substituting goats milk. What else can I do?

ANSWER: Why on earth would the mother begin to wean them at 17 weeks??????

Something is very wrong there.

Most mother dogs won'y even wean; puppies 2-3 months old will sit under hear while she stands and nurse!

17 days old is extremely young.

Get a grip on this right now....

Here is a formula for you to make and put into a regular baby bottle to feed this pup:

1 can (12 oz.) evaporated milk (NOT condensed)

1 raw egg

1 cup whole, plain yogurt (no flavored yogurt!)

1 teaspoon white syrup (Kayro syrup)

Mix in blend: do not froth, simple mix...........

Pour into airtight pitchers or container...a milk gallon is good... and add 1-2 cups sterile water (bottled water, filtered water or distilled water is fine)

You can pre-make baby bottles up as you might your own infant and store them and all formula in refrigerator.

Heat a bottle in a bottle warmer or in a microwave- but remove the nipple while heating. Test the temperature on your inner arm as you would your own infant. The temperature should take the chill off, but not be warm- more of a room temp but a shade warmer.........

Feed this puppy every 2 hours around the clock faithfully!

Feed him the rice cereal mixed with this formula....every 2 hours.

You must get this puppy to gain weight....... No goats milk- use my formula; it is approved by three vets and I have supplemented mom's milk with this when she had too many puppies and short on milk production.

I have had 20 healthy puppies raised on this formula and schedule while supplementing mom's milk and all are extremely healthy dogs today.

I have saved and rounded out a "swimmer" puppy (I don't know if you know what that is...) and allergic puppies, sickly puppies, and runts.

QUESTION: What do you mean 17 weeks. Where do you see anywhere that I said 17 weeks. The opening sentence clearly says 17 days old.
And I have tried that concoction for 3 days now. But mine does not have the yogurt. And the person who gave me that formula told me
specifically to only give it to him bid. In the am and pm for 30 seconds only. Is that essential, the yogurt? He throws up on
everything I give him. The mothers milk comes up to. And I was feeding him q2hrs. and it does not stay so I cut back because
I thought it was to much for his little stomach.

Answer
I meant 17 days old... my mistake...

If he is throwing up mother's milk and the other puppies do not, then he has something wrong.

He is not too little for antibiotics... I have had vets prescribe antibiotics for upper respiratory infections due to cold weather.

My formula is approved by vets and I have had success, so if you cannot get the puppy to keep anything down, he needs to be evaluated by a different vet. Find a new vet.

Also, I do not care what that person said to you, little puppies that young will nurse every chance they get- minimum every 2-3 hours. Watch the other puppies and see how often they nurse mama.

Take my advice on the formula as I gave to you, get a new vet, and do not listen to the person who gave you the puppy because obviously, they do not know what they are doing.

And why would anyone give someone a 17 day old puppy? The yshould not leave their mother until 8-12 weeks old.
