Question
Three days ago we brought home from a local shelter a beautiful male boxer between four and six years old. He tested positive for heartwormws, hook worms, and roundworms.  He is being treated for these, and we hope for a happy outcome. My question is what's the best diet for him? He's pitifully thin, so I want to feed him well, but avoid food allergies, which I understand his breed is prone to.

Answer
Hi Judy,

Congratulations on your new Boxer!  The best diet will vary by dog - what works well for one doesn't work so well for another - but generally speaking you want meats or meat meals as the first ingredients, whole grains rather than grain fragments (unless you opt for grain-free), and no artificial colors, flavors, or preservatives.  There is a good site that lists most brands of dog food, with the ingredients, and rates them based on their own criteria (with explanations of why the foods received the ratings they got).

Boxers do seem to have trouble with corn, so you might find it best to simply avoid that ingredient from the start.

Have fun with your boy!
