Question

Dozer and Musket
We have a 8 week old boxer/pit bull puppy named Musket, We have had her for about a month now, her mother wouldn't feed them. (this i don't understand my son had the mother since 2 months old, but had to give her to a good friend of his) Now that we have Musket she is in a home with her two half brothers (17 months), a mini pen (14 yrs) and chihuahua(8yrs). They all get along great.
She plays with her bothers they way I remember them playing with their mom, The mini pen has taking on the role of mom as she does every dog that comes into our house, she keeps Musket in line and Chihuahua plays with her and helps keep her in line.
I have been giving her chew bones to keep her from chewing on everything and everyone.
We have been training her to a crate. Which she really likes.
The house training is coming along well.
My question is when should be start trying to walk her on a leash? She keeps eating her collars so I put a harness on her.

Answer
Musket is way too young to be off mother-- although you said mom won't feed them. They should have been forced. One at a time, or two at a time. I have seen this done with success.

Her diet is my main concern.

I have an orphan formula I would recommend:

1 can (12 oz.) evaporated milk (not condensed milk)

1 raw egg

1 cup whole, plain yogurt (no flavoring- plain only)

1/2 teaspoon Kayro syrup

7 oz. water

Mix all but the water in a blender. Mix, not froth, and pour into sealed containers. Add the water equally to them. (a blender won't hold the milk, yogurt and water all at the same time; therefore adding the water to the sealed containers is the only way).

Feed this to her as often as every 3 hours. Maybe 2 hours if she acts hungry or whines.

Buy a natural puppy food with NO corn and NO corn glutens. Soften with the formula in an airtight, sealed bowl. When softened, mash with a fork and a spoon into a "mash" like oatmeal.

She is not ready to eat nothing but dry dog food yet. She can choke.

Use her harness with a light weight leash and walk her around your house and fenced in back yard for training. Use the heel commands; stop, sit, heel, etc. And, reward her with tidbit treats; maybe puppy sized treats like the peanut chews (it's soft) or bits of cheese, etc. Broken doggie biscuits.

She will get used to the harness and leash soon, and learn the commands soon.

Continue this daily, if only in the house for 10-15 minutes.

Don't take her outside your own yard until fully confident she is trained on the commands-- and never allow a dog OFF a leash to be loose- ever!
