Question
Hi, I have 2 boxers, 1 male and 1 female.
The female went into heat/season for her first time last year when she was just gone 1yr old we thought she was too young to breed at this stage and also i was due a baby so we had to get the male casturated and said we would wait till her next heat/season to breed her with a stud dog.
She turned 2 yrs old in march and came into her 2nd heat 3 weeks ago.  She was bleeding for 20 days and we brought her to the stud dog the day after bleeding stopped and also the following 2 days but she wud not stand for the dog on any occasion.
he was very interested but when he wud mount her, she kept sitting down and turning away and on the final day actually got aggressive(growling) after a few attempts from the male. have you any ideas on what the problem may be as I have spoke to 3 different vets and have gotten all different answers but none can say for definite and I am so confused.

Answer
She should have a heat twice a year- every 5-6 months.

Secondly, out of the month of being in heat, there are about 4 stages. Only one stage during heat does the female accept a male. Not before and not after.

When she "flags" her tail-- she is ready to accept. That is when her tail (or nubby tail from being docked) is held up and sideways out of the way-- this is the sign she is ready to accept a male and breed.

If she only has one heat a year- something is wrong. Have your vet check her for thyroid problems-- it can cause less heat cyles or none at all- and if she should become pregnant- loose the puppies. It is a simple blood test; they take blood from an artery (usually from the neck) and test it.

Waiting for her to stop the bleeding was too late.
