my boxers ears

My male boxer Max is about 2.5 yrs old. Ever since he was a puppy we have had all kinds of problems with him, especially his ears. They are not clipped and would prefer to keep them that way. Both of his ears have a brown gunk in them. I can clean them out and it would be just the same in two days. Max's left ear is worse with it and has a constant scab at the tip. They both feel unusually hot and seem to bother and hurt him. I've taken him to the vet several times and they have given him different drops for mites, cone around the head, and it helps for a couple of weeks but doesn't fix the problem. I've tried to clean the scab with peroxide and then putting neosporin on it. That doesn't do anything. The vet is doing anything different. What do you suggest? Does his ears need to be clipped? Is he to old for that?

It sounds more like a yeast or other fungal infection rather than mites.  Antibiotics may help.

You can also try a 3 step at home cleaning regime.  Pet Supplies Plus carries a good one if you've got that store in your area.  You have to buy all three bottles separately but the last step is a powder which helps to keep the ears dry.

I would have your vet (or another) take a swab and test him for a fungal infection.

Yes, he's too old to have his ears done and it wouldn't help anyway :)
