How much 2 feed?

Question

Zeus and Apollo
I have two 13 week-old boxer brothers, Zeus and Apollo.  They weighed 21.5 lbs at their 12 week check-up, almost doubling their weight in 20 days.  This concerned me, although the vet said all was fine.  I've been feeding them 3 times a day, around 3/4-1 cup of Puppy Chow, mixed w/ 1/2 cup of Boxer specific dog food from Petsmart(which they love).  They sometimes leave a little in the bowl, but eventually one of them comes back and finishes any leftover food.  It's hard to keep track of who it usually is, but I have my suspicions.  Should I eliminate their noon meal and go to 2 a day, just giving them more?  They vet said to do whatever I wanted, but I'm not sure they need to keep having 3 meals a day.  Also, they are brothers who puppy "fight" a few times a day.  I've read all the info on "mouthing" and how they need to have this socialization in order to learn bite inhibition, etc.  I also know once will become the Alpha, but we can't figure out which one it's going to be.  They both have their moments of being the dominate one.  At what age will this be permanently established?  Will they keep up the puppy "play" (which honestly can get a too rough at times now) when they are fully grown?  We're planning to neuter them around 6 months.  Will this help any?

Answer
Hi Mary. Still keep feeding them three times a day. When they're 6 months old, you can go down to twice a day. I'd stay there while they eat, and after 10 minutes take their bowls up. I wouldn't worry about their growing, as long as they're not over weight. Boxers go through odd growth spurts, and they may eat more when they're hitting one. Having them neutered will help with the dominance thing. There's not really a certain age where dominance is established. They may go back and forth with it their whole lives.I have found in my own Boxers that they do keep this play up even when grown. I'd suggest obedience classes for both these boys. It will help. Good luck!
