Stud Fee

Question
I have recently been approached about studding my boxer and am wondering what the rate would be?  The female owner has asked what I charge.  I am new to this and not sure what the best way to deal with this.  Thank you for your help with this.  Joe

Answer
Stud fees vary considerably, depending on a number of factors.  For an unproven male such as yours, the stud fee will be low - you don't know for sure if he's even capable of siring puppies, and until you do (his first litter is born) you can't ask for much.  Generally speaking 1/4 to 1/2 the price of a puppy is appropriate.  If he's been health tested (DM, ARVC, AS, HD, CHT - not just a vet check - and brucellosis is mandatory for both the dog and the bitch) the fee will be higher.  If the bitch owner is planning to offer show prospects, then if he's never been shown the fee will be lower, and if he's finished it will be higher.

I do have an article about offering a Boxer at stud here:
