Question

Lazarus changing color
Jennifer,

I realize that this might be the wrong place to ask, but my vet has absolutely no clue and claims that she has never seen such a drastic color change in any breed.

I have a husky/boxer mix.  My husband and I got him at a no-kill shelter when he was 3 months old at the end of June; he is now 4.5 months old.  We love him to pieces, and he is such a good boy.

When we got him, he was brindle all over--a tan/brown with dark striping starting from his nose down to his toes.  He had some reddish/orange coloration behind his ears, and around his feet he still has reddish/orange striping.

Over the past 1.5 months, he has changed from brindle to completely black.  I have never seen anything like this!  He'll be 5 months soon, and I can't help but wonder what color he'll change to next.

Is this a boxer trait, or is the husky portion of his genetics kicking in?  I've posed the same question to the husky experts, but since he's part boxer I thought that I might ask you as well.  I've attached a picture, but let me know if it doesn't work.

Thank you for your time,

Shauna

Answer
Hi Shauna,

Definitely not a Boxer trait - but what an interesting color combination! :)

It does seem to be typical for a Siberian Husky puppy to change color as it matures; primarily when the puppy coat is replaced with the adult coat.  Your boy is at the right age for that, so I would guess that's what's happening.   No doubt you'll get more information from the Sibe people on that aspect. :)
